"Uhm, Hub... what?" PhdHub is a tool we built from the ground up to help doctoral school/programs (Phd!) and other research organizations on a daily basis. That is, directory listing, contacts, business trips approval status, collaboration and communication between students, professors and administrative staff. All information is rapidly and easily accessible, updated in real-time.
Naturally, the tool is “in the clouds”. It is being offered as a SaaS - Software as a Service. Though, we don't want to bore you with long descriptions of all the features of the product (and there are many!) What we'd like to do is just tell you a little bit about what sits around the service and what are our future plans to make PhdHub even better.
First off: IDEM Federation - "A secure and privacy-preserving Federated Identity, effective in a trust fabric for research and higher education institutions, and their partners, in Italy and beyond."
We’ve become a partner of IDEM federation officially just a few weeks ago. To get there, the service we’ve developed has been evaluated and tested by GARR people from a number of points of view, including legal and functional parts. Most importantly, the service must have an added value to the members of this federation to get accepted. We are very proud to be their partner.
Why IDEM Federation? It has a lot of advantages.
For one, we can now offer a greater security. You see, the federation works as sort of a broker between PhdHub service and an organization. When users of that organization log in to the service, we don’t ask them any password: the authentication is being done by that same organization! Read more on how the authentication works »
Another big advantage is that a lot of italian universities and research organizations that are members of the federation can now have instant access. No email/confirmation is required! If you are curious, you can actually see them in the “University” drop-down list on our Registration for organizations page. Isn’t that impressive?
What's next?
Well, the fun part is just getting started! In the next couple of weeks we will be listing the service offer on Google Apps Marketplace. Literally millions and millions of organizations are Gone Google. Apps Marketplace is practically a one-stop shop for services in addition to what Google Apps product offers.
Although we don’t have an official PhdHub roadmap yet, here’s just a few things that are on our radar and features we’re working on already:
- Better mobile support via HTML5 and native applications for Android and iOS.
- Integration with many external services, including Google Docs, Zoho, Dropbox and others for a simpler and easier information sharing and distribution.
- More powerful data analysis for our users by integrating PhdHub with technologies like BigQuery.
- Using machine learning services to suggest interesting and maybe important pieces of information to students and their advisors as they go ahead with study and research.
- Video and audio conferencing using technologies where no software installation is required, such as WebRTC and Google Hangouts for extremely easier collaboration.
Having awesome core team and strong expertise in these areas not only from the technical point of view, we believe to be able to bring this niche to the whole new level.

Ed eccoci alla domanda successiva "che cos'è questa cosa impronunciabile ...Hub che?" PhdHub è un servizio che nasce per fornire alle università uno strumento intuitivo, efficace e soprattutto economico per la gestione quotidiana delle scuole/programmi di dottorato (Phd!) ed altri enti di ricerca - quindi dati anagrafici, attività di studio e di ricerca, collaborazione e comunicazione tra studenti, docenti e segreterie.
Naturalmente è un servizio 'in cloud' ed è sviluppato e commercializzato sul modello SaaS - Software as a Service.
Ma non vogliamo annoiarvi con la descrizione di tutte le funzionalità del nostro servizio (che sono davvero tante!). Ciò che vogliamo raccontarvi è invece quello che sta "intorno" a PhdHub, come funziona e quali saranno i nostri prossimi passi per rendere questo servizio ancora migliore.
Prima di tutto: Federazione IDEM - "Una identità federata protetta e rispettosa della privacy, valida in un contesto di fiducia tra le organizzazioni del settore dell'istruzione e della ricerca e i loro partner, in Italia e non solo."
Siamo diventati Partner della Federazione IDEM proprio alcune settimane fa. Il processo per ottenere la partnership prevede una serie di valutazioni e di test da parte del GARR, sia dal punto di vista legale che di tipo tecnico-funzionale. Non solo, uno dei criteri importanti perchè il servizio sia accettato è che porti un valore aggiunto alla federazione e ai suoi membri. Siamo quindi molto orgogliosi di essere diventati loro partner.
Perchè la Federazione IDEM? Per i molti vantaggi che offre.
Per primo, in questo modo possiamo garantire un livello di sicurezza maggiore. La federazione funziona infatti come un intermediario tra PhdHub ed un'ente. Quando gli utenti dell'ente accedono al servizio, non chiediamo loro alcuna password: l'autenticazione viene effettuata direttamente dall'ente stesso. Un altro grosso vantaggio è che gli atenei e gli enti di ricerca già membri di IDEM possono accedere al servizio in maniera immediata, senza alcun tipo di email/conferma da parte di PhdHub. E per il futuro?
Il divertimento è appena iniziato! Nelle prossime settimane inseriremo il servizio nel Google Apps Marketplace. Ormai milioni di enti e aziende sono passati a Google e l'Apps Marketplace è in pratica il negozio virtuale per tutti i servizi aggiuntivi ai prodotti Google Apps.
Anche se non abbiamo ancora una pianificazione ufficiale, ecco alcuni propositi e alcune funzionalità su cui stiamo già lavorando:
- Migliorare il supporto per mobile con HTML5 e applicazioni native per Android e iOS.
- Integrare il servizio con servizi esterni, come Google Docs, Zoho, Dropbox e altri per facilitare la condivisione e la distribuzione di informazioni.
- Potenziare l'analisi dei dati per i nostri utenti, integrando PhdHub con tecnologie come BigQuery.
- Utilizzare servizi di machine learning per suggerie informazioni interessanti e utili agli studenti ed ai professori nei loro percorsi di studio e ricerca
- Facilitare la collaborazione attivando la possibilità di fare audio e video conferenze utilizzando tecnologie che non necessitano l'installazione di software, come WebRTC e Google Hangouts
Questa lista è piuttosto lunga. Ovviamente alcune funzionalità sono più importanti di altre. Come facciamo a scegliere? Con voi! La cosa più importante per noi è cosa voi pensate. Siamo sempre felici di ricevere qualsiasi tipo di feedback!
Con il nostro fantastico team e molta esperienza in questo ambito, non solo dal punto di vista tecnico, siamo convinti di poter portare questa piccola nicchia ad un nuovo livello.
